A Different View of Suffering

Before long I fell in love with the Old Testament. I especially liked the Psalms because I identified with David. He suffered a lot of hardships and he actually cried about them. Just like me, the man wept in despair! Psalms 51 became my prayer.

Clean my heart Lord and make me new.

It startled me to realize that a man like David would suffer the way he did. I’d always assumed I suffered pain because there was something wrong with me. Reading through the psalms and delving into classic books by men like Andrew Murray, George McDonald and St. Francis of Assisi, I got a different perspective. As I saw how those incredible men suffered and yet still pursued God, I felt inspired to do the same. “Okay,” I said, “I’m going to be like them. I’m going to find God no matter how much I hurt.”

That sounded good in theory but when Jimmy would come home and verbally slice me into ribbons I’d cry in agony. I couldn’t see how I could go on living, much less seek God. Then I’d remember what those great men had pointed out.

Jesus wept.

He suffered not only the worst physical pain imaginable, but rejection and persecution from those He loved. Through their writings I saw His pain. Through their teachings I learned the truth of Hebrews 4:14-15:
